Of course you are correct in that luck pays a part in determining winners in stock picking contests, but to bring up an old cliche, if you work hard and smart you can make your own luck, at least to a certain extent.

If it was completely random, how have I managed to finish in the top three three years running? BTW, each time I have had substantial holdings in my pick, so did benefit in the real world

I used to get analogous comments when I worked in an office and consistently finished in the money in hockey and soccer pools.

And to extend your point, my prowess in hockey pools does not reflect the fact that I have never skated.
