My impression is that the US is expecting the righteousness (for lack of a better word) of the campaign against Hezbollah will prevail, along with the military campaign to break Hezbollah once and for all. The initial reaction of the moderate Arab governments fit the plan perfectly.

Now if those capitals break the other way, along with the Arab street revolting against too many dead Lebanese in the crossfire, it will be hard to back away into a more traditional negotiating and mediating stance.

I have to admit that Hezbollah is a much tougher nut to crack than I thought initially. I have never paid any attention to Lebanon; when I did my junior year in England there was a Lebanese guy down the hall whose conversations with his friends started out loud and usually ended up with screaming.

Not my scene, LOL.
