Alex, the flu virus in flu shots is dead!!! It cannot give you the flu. However, not all the correct viruses are identified every year to be put into the vaccine mix, and so it is definitely possible to have a flu shot and still get the flu. My own experience is that the vaccine generally boosts my immune system--I get fewer colds, of lesser severity, since I have been getting shot up every year. There was a VERY nasty cold going around northern California at the end of September. Could that be what you had? And the flu season is apparently early this year, as well.

Now, some good news on the smoking front. Contrary to what the smoking lobby is telling us, a new Field Poll shows that a majority of smokers like the nonsmoking laws in California bars. According to a Field Research Corp. poll, 65% of bar patrons surveyed approve of the law prohibiting smoking in bars and taverns. That was up from 59% in a similar poll conducted in February and March, according to the Department of Health Services.

Hurrah!!! The more popular the law is, the less likely it will be overturned. And the nice barmaids won't continue forever to have twice the incidence of heart disease and cancer that other workers do.
