TRANsendTM QAM is a Vital Component for Delivering Digital Services

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - November 18, 1997 - Harmonic Lightwaves, Inc. today announced the availability of its TRANsend Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) modulator, the industry's first QAM modulator that supports the Multimedia Cable Network Systems (MCNS) standard. A key component of a digital headend, QAMs enable cable television and wireless operators to provide their subscribers with advanced digital services, such as high-speed Internet access, digital video and video-on-demand.

Operators must upgrade their network headends with QAM modulators to deliver advanced digital services. QAM modulators perform the Forward Error Correction (FEC) coding and modulation necessary to transmit digital signals over broadband networks to cable modems, set-top boxes or digital televisions. By supporting the North American MCNS specification and the Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) standard adopted in Europe, Harmonic's TRANsend QAM modulator, model QMM 8000, can interoperate with all standards-based cable modems and other products without modification.

"Our QAM modulator is the latest example of Harmonic's commitment to enabling cable operators to maximize their hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) networks and to provide their subscribers with innovative new services," said Tony Ley, president, chairman and CEO of Harmonic Lightwaves. "The QMM 8000 is also the first Harmonic product for wireless operators."

About the TRANsend Line

Harmonic's TRANsend product line is a family of digital data, video and audio compression products for the broadband network headend. In addition to the QMM 8000, the TRANsend line currently includes the MPE 8000 and VTP 8000. The MPE 8000 is an MPEG-2 encoder and the VTP 8000 is a video transmission platform and the main building block within a digital headend. The TRANsend digital compression products are compatible with all worldwide and domestic standards, including ITU/SCTE (International Telecommunications Union/Society of Telecommunications Engineers), DVB and DAVIC (Digital Audio Video International Communication), and are therefore, interoperable with all other standards-based products available to the industry.
