Hi X, It sounds like an optical cross connect where the electronic switching happens in the acoustic range (0 to 5 KHz). It would have an advantage over mechanical switching because of speed, but would only have an advantage over electronic conversion in cases where the number of changes per cross connects per second was low (ie ...once a connection is established it does not not change till a burst of optical data is sent). I will try to look at the patent when I get a chance. It does not sound all that much better than some of the multiplexer/de-multiplexer systems out there. This is not my area of engineering though. Thanks for the suggestion.
