Marine Roasts Media at Armed Forces Day Event

Maj. Gen. Ron Richard, USMC (Ret) was the keynote speaker at an Armed Forces Day ceremony Saturday at the USS Kidd and Louisiana Veterans Memorial Plaza where he drew applause and cheers from the Veteran and Military audience for his fiery criticism of the media for its vast coverage of the Abu Ghraib prison incident.

Maj. Gen. Richard said the media have overdone coverage of the abuse, especially in comparison to the small amount of attention paid to last week's beheading of an American citizen. Surrounded by the Memorial Wall that lists the names of Louisiana veterans killed in combat, Richard charged his listeners to speak out against the media's actions. "It's our obligation to talk to the media when they continually show the negative more than the sacrifice and the wonderful stories out there," he said. "It irks me to no end." Richard implored the audience to urge government officials to influence the news media to stop what he described as "sickening."
