Ireland Says No

The people of Ireland have rejected the Lisbon Constitutional Treaty in a referendum held yesterday, the Irish justice minister has conceded.

Official results aren't due for another few hours but early counts are suggesting the margin was around 52 to 48 percent.

That loud hissing sound you hear is a massive sigh of relief emanating from the offices of Number 10 Downing Street, where once again foreign citizens have saved a British PM with a confrontation with the people over EU federalism.

We'll update this story as more news comes in, with analysis on what this means for the EU to come.

However, we don't think that Ireland's vote will make a blind bit of difference to the EU federalist mission, more's the pity.

UPDATE: View from France. Le Monde, quite unbelievably, blames Rupert Murdoch's press for Irish Euroscepticism. Duh. Some sources are claiming, too, that the Lisbon Treaty has "already incorporated the Irish "non" - so it was designed to be undemocratic from the start, then?
