Digital Me (ecommerce) and NTT

Do not recall any deal between Novell and NTT. However this is the essence of the "hot new product" problem for Novell --- do you wait for one of your enterprise customers (like NTT) to come to you because of your "superior technology" (with their better fingerprint smartcard) or do you show everybody what can be done with your technology by doing it yourself in partnership with smaller companies.

Senior management at Novell has been drawn from IBM and SUnW. These are companies with a decidedly enterprise outlook. On the other hand you have MSFT with senior management drawn from the PC industry and an almost predatory outlook toward the promising technology of smaller companies. MSFT typically legitimizes these technologies for their enterprise customers. It is a marketing company, it innovates nothing.

Novell on the other hand is an engineering company. It typically develops a better engineered product and waits for someone to buy it. Can Novell change from being a catchup type of company in the marketing of its technologies to being there first with the "hot new" ecommerce directory product?

That is what Eric Schmidt has to ponder. Does he have the management structure that will enable Novell to market products like Digital Me?

======================

Incidentally my wife feels my enthusiasm for the possibilities of Digital Me for Novell have overwhelmed my judgement as to the companies real prospects. I'm holding my own against the banging pots and pans in the kitchen for now.
