North Korea Has Nuclear Weapons, State Radio Broadcast Says
By Paul Tighe

Pyongyang, North
Korea, Nov. 18
(Bloomberg) -- North
Korea's government
said for the first time
the country has
nuclear weapons, the
British Broadcasting
Corp. reported, citing a commentary on state radio.

North Korea has developed powerful military counter-measures, including nuclear
weapons, the BBC quoted the state radio broadcast as saying late yesterday.
The U.S. State Department last month said North Korea acknowledged it is
developing a nuclear weapons program in violation of a 1994 accord.

The U.S. must sign a non-aggression treaty as the only way to solve the nuclear
issue, the BBC cited the commentary as saying. North Korea has ``a small
number'' of nuclear weapons, U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said last
month.

The U.S., South Korea, Japan and the European Union last week suspended
monthly fuel shipments to North Korea until the country ends its nuclear
weapons program. The four members of the Korean Economic Development
Organization supplied about 500,000 metric tons of fuel oil annually under the
1994 accord that promised aid in exchange for North Korea abandoning its
nuclear arms program.
