Consultant to be hired for coal gasification plan

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The government is likely to appoint a consultant shortly for examining the viability of coal gasification plan devised by the government, a senior government official told Daily Times.

The government would take a decision after listening to the viewpoints of all the stakeholders at a high level meeting to be held in Lahore either on Friday or Saturday. The ministry of petroleum and natural resources has chalked out a plan to execute two projects; one at Bhakkar in Punjab and the other at Thar in Sindh for converting coal into gas.

The official said that consultant would look into the viability of the projects, as there were some reservations regarding these projects. The main issue is the cost of the projects.

He said that coal gasification was not very common throughout the world for it is believed to be costly. However, there are some countries, which gasify coal to meet their needs. staff report
