Most of the cos. have been selling product or services for a few yrs. now (a lifetime in this industry), Viasoft going back to 1990. They range from insignificant revs. in '96 (ACLY and ALYD) on up to Viasoft w/ $85mm in revs. in FY97. Most have had spotty track records in terms of profitability, and showed losses or flat bottom line growth in '96 (understandable as they shifted focus from existing lines or just ramped up infrastructure to meet anticipated future demand). All have different operating models, some of which may allow for margins that high (ACLY had 57% operating margins last yr) while others like VIAS would never approach those levels. As is seen by VIAS' P/E, this doesn't make them less attractive, it just means they have structured their businesses differently. (I have gotten all of this information from Baseline and assume it is correct, but don't bet the retirement funds on it!) Good luck to all (except the shorts!)
