bosquedog, I finally discovered that the diagnostics tests for my Dell reside on the CD labelled 'Drivers and Utilities'. Booting with it in the CD drive brings up the diagnostics program in DOS. I ran all the tests and all passed. So I learned something. :)

Thank you and thecow for your help. Dell diagnostics passed my pc's memory even with the extended test. Norton had failed it.
