Dear LKO:
In reference to your post..."There in lies the difference between Hyderabad kingdom (really small)and Kashmir (substantial size)." You might want to know that the former Hyderabad state covered an area larger than England and Scotland combined.
Further to this, "Princely India covered an area slightly larger than 40% of the subcontinent, consisting of 562 native states ruled over by a variety of maharaos, rajas, et cetera, and a single Nizam, who was the ruler of the largerst and richest of the princely states, Hyderabad." P. 10, "Princely India" Foreward by John Kenneth Galbraith, Alfred A. Knofp, NY 1980.
The book goes on to explain life in a princely state and I actually know the author who is a seedy sort of individual; today he is a man who never washes, and who lives in a cardboard box under the Santa Monica freeway. A very sad case. Too much curry perhaps. |
