Egypt Confiscates Illegal Imports Of Pfizer's Impotence Pill
May 18, 1998 5:43 AM

CAIRO (AP)--Egyptian police and health ministry
officials are raiding drug stores to confiscate illegally
imported bottles of the impotence drug Viagra, an
official said Monday.

Egypt has imposed a ban on the drug and has ordered
clinical tests, said Gamila Moussa, the deputy health
minister.

She said Pfizer, the U.S.-based manufacturer of Viagra,
has applied for ministry approval to sell the drug in
Egypt, a process which could take some time.

"The drug is illegal and we want to test and try it before
we allow it in our market," she told The Associated
Press.

Health inspectors and police have been raiding
pharmacies and confiscating the drug, which has been
smuggled into Egypt and is sold on the streets and in
clinics for 60 Egyptian pounds ($17.50) per pill. The
drug costs $10 per pill in the U.S.

The state-owned Al-Akbar newspaper said legal action
is being taken against pharmacies selling Viagra. It did
not disclose the measures.
