MapQuest to Deliver Driving Directions to New Palm VII Organizer Users PRNewswire - 01:46 p.m Dec 02, 1998 Eastern
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- GeoSystems Global Corp., the publishers of MapQuest(R) (www.mapquest.com), the Web's #1 travel site, will provide driving directions to users of the Palm VII(TM) connected organizer, a new and wireless handheld computing product from Palm Computing, Inc., a 3Com company.
The new Palm VII connected organizer, announced today at the Palm Computing Platform Worldwide Developer Conference, will provide fast, secure and easy out-of-the-box access to personal, business and Internet information. The product will enable users to quickly and easily obtain important information from various Web sites remotely via wireless connection to the Internet. With mobile connectivity to MapQuest, Palm VII users can access the Web's most accurate driving directions without desktop synchronization or even connecting to a telephone line.
"MapQuest and Palm Computing are a perfect match," said Michael Mulligan, CEO of GeoSystems. "MapQuest provides driving directions for people on the move, and who could be more mobile than Palm's users?"
"MapQuest offers one of the most invaluable mapping services for anyone who drives a car, and yet that information is most useful in locations where a desktop PC is not available and a laptop is impractical," said Andrea Butter, acting vice president of marketing, Palm Computing. "Palm VII users will be able to access MapQuest from a car, a parking lot, or wherever they happen to be when they need information most."
The relationship with 3Com follows a series of advances in MapQuest products and services, including the total re-design of the MapQuest Web site and the launch of the MapQuest MapStore, the largest source of maps and map products available online. GeoSystems is dedicated to leading mapping industry into the latest technological arenas.
The Palm VII connected organizer is the first handheld solution for out-of-the-box wireless communications and Internet access. In addition to providing fast and simple access to personal and business information, the Palm VII organizer enables users to quickly, easily and securely obtain information from Web sites via a wireless connection to the Internet and provides a means of instant two-way personal communications. The Palm VII organizer enters a national field trial in January 1999, and is expected to be widely available in the U.S. next year.
With the Palm VII organizer, 3Com also introduces a revolutionary new model for accessing Internet information, called web clipping. Web clipping is a means of extracting a specific set of needed information from a given Web site, by requesting certain types of information via query forms that reside on the Palm VII device. Information received from the Internet by a Palm VII user is automatically optimized for viewing on the Palm VII screen.
