Hutchison, NTT to Bid for Australia's C&W Optus, MPD Reports

--From AOL. -- Cooters

Hong Kong, Aug. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. teamed up with Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. to bid for Cable & Wireless Optus Ltd., Australia's No. 2 mobile phone company, the Ming Pao Daily reported, without citing the source of its information.

The report didn't say whether Hutchison is bidding with NTT or one of its units, such as NTT DoCoMo Inc. The acquisition could be worth as much as HK$38 billion ($4.87 billion) based on the Austalian company's current market value.

Cable & Wireless Plc, which has a 52.5 percent stake in Optus, said it's discussed a shareholding structure with the Australia mobile company. No firm plans have been made, the newspaper said.

Optus' Chief Executive Chris Anderson earlier told reporters that the company still expects double-digit revenue growth in the current fiscal year.
