Rendell interested in Obama Cabinet post

The Associated Press

HARRISBURG, Pa. - Gov. Ed Rendell said he would welcome an appointment as the nation's secretary of energy or transportation in a prospective Obama administration once he leaves his state office.

Appearing on a TV talk-show on Harrisburg's public broadcasting station Thursday night, Rendell said he would be happy to serve in the federal government if Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee-apparent, is elected.

He said the top posts in the Department of Energy or the Department of Transportation would "absolutely" be his first choices.

Rendell has repeatedly said that he is not interested in becoming Obama's running mate and that he intends to complete his second term as governor, which expires in January 2011.

"Would I love to go down to Washington in January of 2011 and serve President Obama in some capacity , secretary of energy, secretary of transportation? Sure," he said on WITF-TV's "Smart Talk" program.

"But I'm not leaving" the governor's office early, he said. "I know that probably disappoints some people over in the Capitol."
