No easy answers ..

We only produce domestically about 1/3 of our daily crude/product consumption ..

Even if we opened up everything we've got ie onshore, offshore, ANWR etc etc ..
we still wouldn't come close to energy self sufficiency at present consumption levels ..

CTL/GTL/oil shales/oil sands/heavy oils etc have a huge
resource base, but, they just can't/won't scale up to the
amounts our markets demand and are expensive to produce ..

So, we're left with conservation ( Carter ) and
resource wars ( Kuwait, Iraq ) ..

Not a pretty picture ..
