One big problem with alternate energy is that the needed materials like copper, aluminum, steel, etc keep shooting up in price along with fossil fuels. So you end up on this treadmill where the cost to make solar panels, wind turbines, etc, keeps rising along with oil. However, there is a possible glimmer of hope on the horizon with cheap thin-film solar panels. Time will tell.

In the meantime, the first and best alternative is the old standby: energy efficiency and conservation. People will grumble, but the economics will drive it relentlessly for the next 5-10 years.
