There's a whole generation of new electrical engineers that may have never seen a transformer. Switched capacitor HV supplies are now common, small, cheap, and reasonably efficient. The concept is fairly simple...you use the battery to charge up ten capacitors in parallel. Then switch all the connections to the caps so that they are now wired in series and extract the energy at ten times the original voltage.

Another reason why the HV supply isn't an issue is that LCD displays already have a HV supply to drive the fluorescent backlight. Replacing the LCD with an FED takes away the backlight without changing the HV supply much.
