FWIW, when I called the company, they pointed out that their neighbor operates the largest open pit gypsum mine in the world (or maybe just North America now). It's a big-ass open pit, and they haven't had any environmental issues.

Given that backdrop, I don't think Acadian will have any environmental problems with their relatively small open pit for the zinc. The gold mines shouldn't be too much trouble, either, unless the environmentalists have a much bigger problem with gold than they do gypsum.
