This from a totally non techie, but it stands for "Giant MR", a much more sensitive MR head that can read much more densely packed disks. Here's the MR roadmap, as is currently laid out to my understanding. Giant MR is next Spin Valve(just another form of MR) Colossal MR AXC says that KM is REQUIRED for future advanced head designs. In brief, they have to have different and more sensitive variations to march up to the theoretical limit of 10G/in2, which is slated to be reached around the turn of the century I believe, based on teh IBM announcement we've all speculated about.
