As far as I can tell, bin Laden's fantasies revolve around having the widest ever extent of the Caliphate declared an eternal part of the Umma. This would include Spain. Spain in particular only ever had a small minority of Muslims, hence it was fairly easily won back by Christian troops: presumably even Granada had a majority of Christians.

(I'm guessing he's thinking of the Caliphate since he doesn't mention SE Europe, once Muslim-ruled almost as far as Vienna under the Ottomans).

It's about as realistic as the widest historical extents of the British Empire coming under British rule once more... interesting thought. Not sure we'd want them <gg>

However the specific complaint of Bin Laden's and the grounds on which he launched his jihad seem to revolve around infidels on holy land - i.e., US troops based in Saudi Arabia, land of Mecca (and Medina). Iraq has no such holiness to Sunnis (unlike Shi'a) but does have Baghdad, home of the Caliphs for hundreds of years...
So ambitious, but not quite so delusional or pre-medieval.
