Personal Computing Home network on the way
BLOOMBERG in Scottsdale IBM is to sell a device that creates a digital network for the home in time for Christmas next year.
Code-named the Home Network, it was one of chairman Louis Gerstner's top projects and stretched across the company, not just IBM PC, said chief technology officer for the PC unit Trey Smith.
The product will be built around a computer server which stores and manages information on networks. Attached to this box will be devices such as a digital video disk player for films and games, a scanner, printer, monitors and fax, all connected using wireless transmission.
For PC applications, the consumer can buy IBM network stations for word processing, personal finance and spreadsheets, for example. Initial price is expected to be US$3,000 for a basic set-up. |
