Nuclear weapons make great power war very unlikely, but not utterly impossible.

I wouldn't side with either the "big war crowd" or the "focus on counter-insurgency crowd". We need BOTH.

Also "big war capability" helps in "small wars". Sure its not the only thing you need. You need boots on the ground providing security and winning "hearts and minds", and gaining intel. But being able to surround a pocket of insurgents with armor, or being able to drop a laser guided bomb on their ass is useful.

And the "big war" capability is what stops the insurgencies from being more than insurgencies. They aren't going to collect together in one big battle and openly attack us, because they know they would get their head handed to them. If we were much weaker in the "big war" capabilities, and we actually had a chance to lose such battles against small local forces things would be a lot worse for any American military effort.
