ETRI to develop advanced mobile communication technology with six companies
¡¡The Electronics and Telecommunication Research Institute(ETRI) has agreed to form a consortium with six communication equipment and service firms to develop the fourth-generation mobile communication system that features a transmission speed of 150Mbps.
¡¡
¡¡ETRI said it has agreed with these companies to join efforts to develop the commercial advanced mobile communication system by 2010. Participants in the development project include SK Telecom, LG Telecom, Samsung Electronics, LG Information & Communication, Hyundai Electronics and Sungmi Electronics. The consortium will develop fundamental technology beginning this year, investing 4.05 million dollars.
¡¡
¡¡The fourth-generation mobile communication will provide super speed multimedia service for regular telecommunications, computing and multimedia services at speeds ranging from 2Mbps to 150Mbps using millimeter waves of 50GHz to 60GHz.
¡¡
¡¡The institute said the fourth-generation technology will enable global roaming, unlike IMT-2000 service, which can only offer limited roaming between synchronous and asynchronous mode. It said it expects to use both the CDMA(code division multiple access) and TDMA(time division multiple access) technologies in the new technology.
