Occupying Iraq is very much like being stuck holding a bucket of manure to the ceiling with a broom handle. If you let go there's going to be a mess so you are tempted to just hang on and try to persuade someone else to take the broom. Still, you can't hold it there forever and no matter when you let go, there is going to be a mess. Might as well just deal with it.

The problem, of course, is the politics that are involved in getting us to do the inevitable.......letting go of the manure.
