I think the Qwest/MSFT deal is a sign of the future. It seems to me that the bandwidth barons have a very good opportunity to provide business services as well as telecom services and this also provides them with a way to hold on to customers.

The way all of this rolls out (according to G. Gilder), there will be a trade off = PC power for bandwidth = let the bandwidth provide the power rather than the PC. Good example is video compression. Today we need extra chips to compress, decompress video in order to be able to receive and play it. With lots of bandwidth, this is unnecessary. When you consider that we are only on the verge of a steep drop in the cost of bandwidth, using bandwidth instead of PC power will become more and more compelling for many existing and more importantly new applications.
