Sam, I am beginning to think that all new technologies are extremely risky as investment vehicles. I'm still not sure I understand the difference between b-cdma and plain vanilla cdma, and I'm wondering whether maybe it should be an investing danger sign that I'm in over my head if I don't understand a particular technology well enough to explain it.

Wasn't it Peter Lynch who urged investing in everyday businesses and products with which we had pleasant experiences? Doesn't Warren Buffett stay away from technology issues because he doesn't understand them well? I'm sure there is a lot of money to be made in new technologies--don't get me wrong--but I'm beginning to think that even if you have your money on the right horse, so to speak, there are ruts in the race track and other unknowns that make it all sheer gambling. One of the trends I'm noticing lately is that some of the new technologies are brilliant, but simply not needed by the time they actually get to market. Who can really predict timing accurately? I have lost a ton of money trying.

Here is an article I found really fascinating about Qualcomm, and more particularly, Globalstar and Iridium. I would argue that Globalstar is less expensive to the user, and superior to Iridium, but this writer believes that in the intervening time between developing the technology and getting the satellites up into the air, the ultimate demand will have decreased precipitously, because wireless communication in general has improved and proliferated much more than expected. So neither Globalstar or Iridium may be a good bet!
