LG Group is confident that it will be an ideal business model for IMT-2000 as its group is a perfect combination of a PCS (personal communication service) provider, LG Information & Telecommunications, the developer of equipment and terminals, LG Electronics, as well as Chollian, a leading online service provider.
LG has not been as successful as other mobile service providers, but the nation's third largest conglomerate is committed to changing that by beating its rivals; Korea Telecom and SK Telecom.
Recognizing the world trend for W-CDMA technology, the group has been spearheading the development of technology for this European-type third-generation mobile service. While SK Telecom, the nation's largest mobile service provider with 011 and 017 under its control, shows off its strength in CDMA technology, LG seeks to reshape the market in tune with the launch of the next-generation mobile service.
LG companies initiated a research project in partnership with 18 small and medium-sized firms to develop core technologies last month. The companies are working on 17 projects encompassing RF technology, digital optic transmission system, terminal and software and its operating system, multimedia service and application service.
At the same time, LG is also forging and strengthening strategic links with overseas partners. LG TeleCom recently made an agreement on comprehensive cooperation with Japan Telecom.
Earlier this month, LG TeleCom and British Telecom (BT) made a joint announcement that the European mobile carrier would participate together in the bid for IMT-2000 license, which is scheduled for September. Though LG is not a leader in voice telephony services, the company boasts strength in contents including wireless data communication, BT said.
Experts say LG TeleCom's partnership with BT, a world leading telecommunication company, will have a great influence on the process of selecting candidates for IMT-2000 licenses.
British Telecom said that Korea is an important focal point in the Asian market, and so BT will win a license for IMT-2000 through sharing burden with LG reasonably. BT holds 24.12 percent stakes in LG TeleCom as the second majority shareholder, and won a license for next-generation mobile services in Britain and Spain.
LG Electronics along with the LG Electronics Institute of Technology and Meanwhile,LG Information and Communications succeeded in adapting Organic Electro Luminescence (EL) display to a fully working mobile phone (model: LGP 7400F i-folder type) last July.
According to the LG companies, Organic EL display is currently receiving a lot of attention as it is the display for mobile phones that can meet requirements of the future IMT 2000 mobile service, which will be offered by countries around the world from 2001.
