OORL Launches MPEG-1 Video Server

Telemedia Systems (TSL), the spinoff from the now-renamed Olivetti & Oracle Research Labs, has announced a corporate information system that uses the MPEG-1 video standard for video on demand (VOD) and live multicast TV.

TSL's CTVpack features the N-Point VRP real-time MPEG-1 encoder, based on a C-Cube chip. It takes analogue PAL or NTSC and streams MPEG-1 video either on an ATM or Ethernet-based network for viewing on desktop PCs. The video can be integrated into other applications via an ActiveX control. The VODpack is a Windows NT-based video server that allows full control of the video feed from the desktop. Users can rewind, pause and so on. The two systems combine in the Starter Kit at around Pounds 8,000 for up to 25 clients-pretty cheap, when you think that it's the cost of a couple of high-end PCs.

TSL is now international, following a second round of venture capital funding from Advent and 3i in March. Chaney said Japan is currently the major buyer of TSL systems (almost 45 percent of production goes there), although the company has now opened offices in the U.S. Around 30 percent of sales go to the training market. The company is also attracting interest from cable companies-"lots of interest, pilot trials"-and satellite operators (15 MPEG-1 streams can be deliverd through a single satellite transponder).
