Because the religious right has gained an awful lot of influence over the past couple of decades.

I must agree having seen the growth of the most extreme religious fanatics in the last few decades in Texas. They began by isolating themselves and potential recruits with their own schools, interlocking business relationships, and emotionally charged private meetings every couple of days.

This has created a atmosphere where every day with every fiber of their being they try to remake the state in their image. The rest of the state just wants to live their lives occasionally and so doesnot resist every day on every issue with the single minded obsession.

The real nuts are only about 10% of the people, but they control a much larger group who is afraid to be identified as somehow outside the group.
