Growing up in Beaumont, I saw many flavors of fundamentalists. We had holy rollers and the Pentecost, but mainly Southern Baptists. Now the Baptists would periodically try to vote the town dry, but that never even came close. While they'd make their public pronouncements and chime in when the preacher called on them, once they got in the voting booth, they would vote for a six pack to take fishing. Same thing later with allowing the Playboy Channel.

But it is different now. I get the feeling it has passed its peak, and as things slip they get more and more shrill.
