Since I am male, I can use the grammatically pure expression without feeling that I am betraying the other members of my sex. I would still use "him".
As for a gender-neutral pronoun, the Dictionary of Political Correctness (an engaging paperback in the tradidtion of Ambrose Bierce) recommends "s'h'it".
