Democratic Leaders Get Lower Marks in Poll

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A year after their party took control of the U.S. Senate, rank-and-file Democrats give their congressional leaders lower marks than Republicans give theirs, and barely half of Democrats say their party does a good job of standing up for its core principles.
A poll released on Wednesday by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press found that 64 percent of Democrats approved of their congressional leaders' performance, while 80 percent of Republicans approved of theirs.

The poll of 1,002 people was conducted May 6-16 with a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.

The poll also found that 51 percent of Democrats said their party does a good or excellent job of supporting core party principles such as defending the interests of working people, minorities and the poor.

In contrast, 62 percent of Republicans said their party does a good or excellent job supporting core principles such as reducing government, cutting taxes and promoting conservative social values, the poll found..
