Looks like his flip-flops are working.

Washington Post/ABC poll: Obama 50%, McCain 42%
USA TODAY

In the second new national poll of the day, Democrat Barack Obama is leading Republican John McCain 50%-42%. The Washington Post/ABC News poll result is similar to what Quinnipiac found in a poll Mark reported on earlier today.

(Update at 7 p.m. ET: The New York Times also has a national poll out tonight. It gives Obama a 6-percentage point lead over McCain among registered voters, 45%-39%. The link is to the actual poll; there may be a story later).

Poll_warningThe Post says "Obama holds his biggest advantage of the campaign as the candidate best prepared to fix the nation's ailing economy, but lingering concerns about his readiness to handle international crises are keeping the race close."

ABC says the poll underscores the stakes for Obama's upcoming foreign trip and an opening for McCain, but adds: "Obama continues to hold most of the advantages in the presidential race, in enthusiasm, levels of partisanship, personal qualities and trust on top domestic issues, notably No. 1, the economy; and he's improved in the past month among swing voter groups."
