I think there is a lot of 'it's just politics, what do you expect?'. People expect the game to be dirty.

But I also believe that mainstream American media is fairly decrepid these days...

Perhaps it's the rush to 'Infotainment', or maybe the increasing concentration of media power in a few corporate hands has something to do with it (no upside in rocking the boat if that threatens the corporate bottom line...)

All told, the media seems fairly brain-dead these days... chasing scandals and 'Hollywood' news rather than 'hard' news.

If it weren't for the Net allowing easy access to foreign news sources (who, presumably, have a more disinterested take on our events) than a lot of stories would never see the light of day... and the public's right-to-know wouldn't be served.
