John,
Re -- I would bet the analysts, especially Erika Klauer, are working way overtime tonight. Watch the spin they put on this information tomorrow.

Yup, They'll blame it all on slowing PC demand, Europe, Product Transitions, and a slow summer. All of which will probably affect Intel's stock price.

What they will not say is that AMD could only produce
350,000 K6's, has yield probems, has decreasing margins in the computing and other business, no tier 1 customers.

They will also not directly admit they were wrong in their estimations. However they will do so sneakily such as lower 97 and 98 estimates (changing estimates is an admission they were wrong previously), or that AMD did not provide appropriate guidance.

If they were following AMD and the Industry closely (Atmel, K5 phase out, K6 availability -- not buying into the AMD activists hype that demand outstriped supply, etc...) they could have perhaps done a better job on the estimates.

Of course they are analysts, paid to analyze the heck out of the hype.
