New Poll: "Cling" comment has no affect on Obama's popularity, he's actually increased his lead over Clinton
The political pundit class isn't going to like this one, but a new Gallup Poll (released today) indicates that Barack Obama is actually at least as popular (if not a bit more popular) after the controversy about his comments that small town Pennsylvanians "cling" to religion and guns in tough economic times.

Hillary Clinton and John McCain have described the comments as condescending, and labeled the Democratic frontrunner an elitist.

The Gallup Poll, however, shows that while before the controversy began (April 8-10) he had a nine point lead among Democrats (51-42) a poll after the controversy shows him with an 11 point lead (51-40). Both results are within the margin of error, but they don't show any movement. And, while these are national number, they do raise questions about the many, many assessments after the controversy broke that (such as those by Karl Rove) that the words meant he'd be beaten badly in Pennsylvania.

Recent polls in the Keystone state have shown him greatly narrowing a double-digit deficit as well.

Gallup Poll editor in chief Frank Newport notes in releasing the poll that there are "no signs in out data that Barack Obama has been hurt by the comments."

In fact, they also polled the specific groups assumed to be most offended by the comments, and found that there had been little if any (no statistically significant) movement in their opinions of the campaign.
