Digital Me and publicity

It's not clear to me yet that this product is well understood either by Novell or the press.

Novell probably has some difficulty understanding the need to go to the end user with a product, especially in an area in which every other company has messed it up by either going with the idea that the OS company would be in charge of your digital ID (see today's NYT article on MSFT) or the vendor would (prevailing basis of e-commerce).

The notion that the user should be in charge is something "new" to the techies. I'm counting on Schmidt to "get it".

In my opinion if Novell embraces Digital Me along the lines I have suggested, with an id vault and verification separated from vendors and OS's, they capture the high ground immediately. This approach will get plenty of endorsements including political ones.

Before introducing such a product I would meet extensively with various privacy groups and lay the whole thing out to them seeking their approval.

As to the press. They have yet to grasp the usefulness of a directory. One of the virtues of Digital Me is that it educates the press rather quickly about the value of Novell's core product --- NDS and directories.

I think Novell will introduce the 10 Zens at Brainshare to the press. Other than a reporter at CBS whom I have contacted, that will probably be the first impression the press has of what Novell is up to. That is when I expect them to begin to understand what value directories have to the internet.

We are way ahead of the curve here on this thread, and frankly I like it that way. Time to get rewarded for our efforts, don't you think?
