I had in mind mud huts with outside plumbing and not enough clothes to wear, and sorrow of all kinds. You know, what passes for reality on much of the planet.

I know of many such places, most of which would be perfectly safe for a teenager. Please don't imagine, though, that sorrow dominates. There is no lack of it, but there is joy as well. I've lived for extended periods in a number of remote 3rd world areas, and one thing I've noted is that while sorrow abounds, depression seems virtually nonexistant. I sometimes think we've done a better job of removing our coping mechanisms than we have of removing our sorrows.
