It sounds like the classic Marx line:

"Religion is the opiate of the people."

You don't have to an Evangelical or pious to get elected. But you had better sound like you understand it. I think Lincoln was the least religious of our Presidents, other than perhaps, Eisenhower, but he never made a speech without mentioning God.
