That assumes they were genetically close enough to be fertile. Given that the mitochondrial DNA suggests that none of the Neandertal genes are in the current human pool, that could be the case. Or it might be that Neandertal and their hybrid offspring couldn't form words like H. sap. And that would limit breeding opportunities for the males.

I agree that the experiment was probably tried more than once. Even by given individual. But there don't appear to be any traces left. Unless they find a blue dress in a cave somewhere...
