I like to compare Christianity with Mormonism, which has a well documented history written by non-church sources written in American English. Mormonism is well on it's way to rewriting many of the tenets of it's founder, polygamy, blacks as inferior people, and many other items that just don't sell well today. It desperately wants to be thought of as just another form of evangelical Christianity.

It's pretty clear that Joseph Smith was perhaps America's premiere con man, who pulled off that highest of cons, founding a religion that stuck and grew. As with all great salesmen, he had to first convince himself that he was for real.

Brigham Young University has an entire college devoted to Mormon apologetics and explanations, that attempts to discredit the doubters. It's a losing effort.

When I compare that to Christianity, which for perhaps 1000 years had total political control and control over all ancient sources found, the Mormon Church has a much harder job.
