High-Performance Switches Double Available Port Densities,
Slash Per-Port Costs By Over 30 Percent
Addressing customer requirements for lower-cost, higher-bandwidth
desktop connectivity solutions, Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS) today
unveiled two new Fast Ethernet SmartSwitches -- a 16 port wiring
closet switch for the SmartSwitch 6000 and a 26 port data center
switch for the SmartSwitch 9000.
In a related announcement, Cabletron also launched a new
rebranding strategy. The strategy includes a new naming convention,
under which Cabletron's MMAC-Plus and SmartCell products, as well as
other selected offerings, will be recast under the SmartSwitch brand.
The renaming results from a simple numeric series, which identifies
the market segment torward which a product solution is targeted.
Based on Cabletron's SmartSwitch architecture, the new Fast
Ethernet switches incorporate Cabletron's award-winning, distributed
switching framework. Under this architecture, each module provides
wire-speed performance, switch and management processing. The
distributed architecture provides customers with unmatched
scalability, reliability and performance, allowing customers to scale
their networks to meet increasing user traffic loads.

SmartSwitch 9000 - Industry's Highest Port Density Solution
Designed for mission critical environments, the new Fast Ethernet
module for the SmartSwitch 9000 allows up to 364 ports to be
configured within a single chassis -- offering the highest port
density in the industry. With 24 auto-negotiable 10/100 switched
Ethernet ports, and two switched 100FX Fast Ethernet ports, the new
SmartSwitch supports embedded RMON, Full Duplex operation and
broadcast control on every port. The new module provides switched
connectivity to the SmartSwitch 9000's multi-gigabit backplane,
offering high-speed connectivity to technologies including Ethernet,
Token Ring, Gigabit Ethernet, FDDI and ATM.
Fast Ethernet for the Wiring Closet - SmartSwitch 6000
With 16 ports of connectivity, the new Fast Ethernet module for
the SmartSwitch 6000 doubles the density of the chassis to 80
auto-negotiable 10/100 Ethernet ports. Similar to the module for the
9000, the SmartSwitch 6000 switch also supports RMON, Full Duplex
operation, broadcast control and layer 3 switching capabilities on
every port.
