I would be slow, if I were you, to defend the historical record of the British. Somebody might mention the opium trade, one of the most profitable and least moral business enterprises ever conducted. Surely you don't think that Bertie Wooster, Lord Emsworth, and Stilton Cheesewright, or more properly their ancestors, gained their lavish holdings from ordinary commerce....

There are a fair number of other things as well, which nobody will bring up because colonial history has been so thoroughly forgotten on both sides of the pond. We have equally sullied histories. We are being more sanctimonious and more generally arrogant than you are at the moment, but that is only because we have the capacity to do so. I don't see any valid historical claim to moral superiority on either side.
