Who remembers why Korea and Japan were in a hurry to get a 3G system up and running by 2002?

World Cup Soccer.
Japan and Korea will co-host the 2002 World Cup. The entire world (with the near singular exception of the U.S.) will be focused on Japan and Korea for the month long tournament. Both countries will go to great lengths to showcase their leads in technology for the world to see. This is one reason I think that Korea will go with at least one W-CDMA system in the new spectrum, to have global roaming fully available for the European fans both attending, and watching (advertising) the event.
P.S. I live in a town hosting a number of events for the 2002 Winter Olympics, and can attest to the massive spending on all infrastructure, including telecommunications, that go with hosting a major event. US West, now Qwest, is building a premier communication system, both fiber optic and wireless, to our town of 10,000. The Winter Olympics pale in comparison on a worldwide basis to the World Cup. |
