ActivCard First to Deliver Software Modules Enabling Smart Card Vendors To Achieve FIPS140 Level 2 Certification for Open Platform-based Java Cards
Continues to Demonstrate Leadership and Technological Innovation by Delivering Solutions to Support Industry and U.S. Government Interoperability And Security Standards
FREMONT, Calif., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- ActivCard (Nasdaq: ACTI; Easdaq: ACTI), the leading provider of smart card and digital identity provisioning products and technology, today announced that it is the first and only smart card software provider to deliver applets, software applications that run on smart cards, that enable Open Platform and Java Card-based smart cards to achieve FIPS140 Level 2 Certification for PKI applications.

To receive certification by the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST), and fully comply to the stringent Department of Defense (DoD) Common Access Card (CAC) specifications for Java-based smart cards with cryptographic applications, smart cards must be tested as an integrated solution including both the card and software applets.

All CAC cards are now required to be FIPS140 Level 2 certified. Newly certified cards are now available and are in high demand. ActivCard's applets, licensed by the DoD, are currently being deployed by the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) on CACs to over 4 million DoD uniformed services personnel, civilian employees, and eligible contractors. A FIPS140 Level 2 certified CAC must maintain the specific combination software/card that was tested and certified by NIST in order to remain compliant.

ActivCard's role in the DoD CAC program and the selection of ActivCard by leaders in the network computing market, including Hewlett-Packard and Sun Microsystems for their own internal smart card programs, have made ActivCard a leading provider of large-scale smart card-based ID solutions. ActivCard has been selected for initial deployments within the Department of the Navy, the Army and the DMDC and continues to be evaluated by several other organizations within DoD.
