>> Samsung Develops Thinner Battery For Cellphones

January 4, 2002

Samsung SDI has developed the world's thinnest lithium-ion rechargeable batteries for cell phones, at 2.8mm in depth. The most advanced battery technology so far only offers 3mm-thin products.

The new battery can store 355 watt hours in a space of a 2.8mm-thin, 34mm-wide and 58mm-high pack. It has been a challenge for the battery industry to scale down battery size, while at the same time obtaining high internal pressure resistance and meeting satisfactory insulation requirements.

Samsung SDI was successful in developing an ultra-thin lithium ion battery by employing a new sealing method.

Samsung SDI provides lithium-ion batteries to Samsung Electronics and is now in negotiations to export its lithium-ion batteries to mobile giants overseas, once it acquires quality certification. "The newly-developed batteries are as light and thin as polymer batteries. With continued development, we will put these ultra-thin lithium ion batteries on the market sooner than expected", said Mr. Ki-Hoon Ahn, VP of Mobile Energy at Samsung SDI. <<
