The best thing that ever happened to the media was the proliferation of shows like Wheel of Fortune and Entertainment Tonight to compete with newscasts. The portion of the public that doesn't understand beyond the headlines is usually not paying attention at all, because they are watching Vanna turn those letters. This makes it much more difficult for the media to cause trouble.
